Tamil Nadu appeals in Supreme Court, says Karnataka yet to release Cauvery water

New Delhi: The Tamil Nadu government today moved the Supreme Court for contempt action against Karnataka, saying the state had not released 2.44 TMC, or thousand million cubic feet, of Cauvery water as ordered by the top court.

Tamil Nadu's petition said the Mettur dam in the state had got only 700 cusecs of water in the last five days as Karnataka did not release any water.

On February 7, the Supreme Court had asked Karnataka to immediately provide Tamil Nadu 2.44 TMC of Cauvery water to irrigate winter crops.

Karnataka yesterday appealed to the Supreme Court to review its order, saying this would cause drinking water shortage in Bangalore. Protests are being held in the state against the release of water to Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu had demanded 9 TMC of water but a committee appointed by the Supreme Court recommended 2.44 TMC for standing crops on one lakh acres.
