Tamil Nadu Governor, Leaders Extend Independence Day Greetings to People

Chennai: State leaders led by Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah today extended their Independence Day greetings to the people of the state.

In his message, the Govenor conveyed his "heartiest greetings and best wishes to the citizens of our great nation," on the occasion of its 68th Independence Day being celebrated tomorrow.

"Let us on this auspicious occasion resolve to dedicate ourselves to strengthen our national fabric and shoulder the responsibility of taking our nation to greater heights. May we pledge to uphold our nation's sovereignty and integrity and contribute our might for peace, progress and prosperity," he said in a Raj Bhavan statement.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, in her greetings, recalled famous poet Subramaniya Bharathi's lines and urged people to remain united in order to uphold freedom.

"This is a day to remember the selfless freedom fighters who toiled hard for the country's independence,"she said in an official statement and recalled various measures implemented by her government for freedom fighters, including increasing their pension besides construction of memorials.

DMDK founder and Opposition Leader in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Vijayakant said the country was facing a series of domestic problems, including inflation, even as external threats from neighbours also persisted.

An ally of the BJP, he wished these things change for the better under the Narendra Modi-led government. In a party statement, he urged one and all to take a vow to uphold the spirit of freedom.

BJP's state unit president Pon.Radhakrishnan and TNCC president B S Gnanadesikan also extended their Independence Day greetings.
