Chennai:
Tamil Nadu government on Thursday said that it has taken up with Karnataka a proposal to construct a check dam across Tenpennaiyar River by the latter.
Replying to a special call attention motion moved by Left parties, Congress and PMK in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Public Works Department (PWD) Minister KV Ramalingam said the state government had written to Karnataka recently seeking details.
Citing an earlier agreement, he said that Karnataka had to get Tamil Nadu's consent on any such proposal and added that a reminder would be sent from the Chief Secretary.
A committee would be formed to monitor the issue, he said adding that Tamil Nadu will not compromise on its rights on this matter involving the inter-state river.
Earlier, Opposition Members of Legislative Assemblies expressed fears that if Karnataka's plans succeed, it would affect Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Dindigul and Villupuram districts in Tamil Nadu.
The two states are already locked in a bitter row over sharing Cauvery river water and a case is pending before the court.
