Tamil Nadu to implement high security number plate scheme this year

Chennai: In compliance with the Supreme Court direction, Tamil Nadu government said on Monday that it will implement the High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) scheme this year.

As per notification issued by the Union Government and in compliance with the directions of the Supreme Court, the HSRP scheme in the state will be implemented this year, Transport Minister V Senthil Balaji said.

He, however, did not give a timeframe for this purpose.

In the policy note of his department for the year 2012-13 tabled in the state Assembly, Mr Balaji said HSRP will be fitted on new and old vehicles in the Regional Transport Offices.

"For the new vehicles, HSRP will be fitted at the time of registration," he said adding the move would prevent stolen vehicles from being used for criminal activities using fake number plates.

The Supreme Court had directed various states and Union territories to launch HSRP, which are tamper-proof and non-replaceable, by April 30 for new vehicles and June 15 for old vehicles.

He said the number of vehicles registered in the state as on March 30, 2012 was in excess of 1.53 crore.
