Hyderabad:
Defying heavy security, over 40 lawmakers and 15 ministers from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions protested inside the Andhra Pradesh Assembly premises today against the creation of Telangana state.
The three-hour long protest was organised by lawmakers belonging to the United Andhra Pradesh Congress MLAs and MLCs Forum, a platform formed to protest the creation of India's 29th state, announced by the Centre in July.
The protest came a day after the Home Ministry said it is considering a resolution that details how Telangana will be carved out of Andhra Pradesh within the next 20 days.
The Centre has indicated that it will take the Telangana proposal forward without running it by the Andhra Pradesh assembly first, in the face of unrelenting protests in the coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions, also known as Seemandhra, for more than a month now.
Sources said the Home Ministry resolution is also considering a proposal to convert Hyderabad into a Union Territory; so far, the government has said that it will be a shared capital between the old and new state for 10 years, with the IT hub going to Telangana after that.
The monsoon session of Parliament, which expires on Friday, is witnessing strong protests by lawmakers from the Seemandhra region.
Yesterday, nine Members of Parliament or MPs were suspended for disrupting proceedings by shouting and protesting against the Telangana decision. Four of the suspended parliamentarians belong to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) headed by Chandrababu Naidu; the others were from the ruling Congress.
