Chennai:
Imagine finding seventy sovereigns of gold, platinum and diamond jewellery stolen from your home left at your doorstep with an apology note from the thief! This is exactly what a cancer specialist in Chennai witnessed on Wednesday evening.
The calling bell at his residence was rung this evening. When he went out, he was surprised to find his jewels returned with a letter written in grammatically incorrect Tamil expressing regret for the theft.
On Friday, Dr. Azar Hussain and his family were away attending a function. Thieves entered their home in Saidapet in South Chennai by cutting open a window grill. The criminals wiped the almirah clean and escaped. The jewellery had been recently taken out of the bank locker and a part of it was gifted to the doctor's new daughter in law.
The oncologist, who works at the Adyar Cancer Institute, has handed over the letter and the bag with the jewels to the Kotturpuram Police. Finger prints have been taken from the letter and the jewellery.
Police sources suspect that either a maid or driver may have connived with a few others known to the family to commit the offence. A dispute may have arisen over sharing of the booty and to spite the others, one of the gang members may have returned the whole loot.
While the doctor is certainly relieved, he is not complaining!
