Visakhapatnam:
Three persons, who allegedly tried to loot a passenger of a train, died after they jumped off the running train on Sunday in an attempt to escape, police said.
The incident occurred in the Howrah-Hyderabad East Coast Express near Pendurthy at 3.40 AM near Chintalagraharam in Pendurthy mandal of Visakhapatnam district, police said.
According to police, the robbers had tried to loot a B-1 AC coach passenger Santilal Jain, an MBA student, by snatching his bag, Superintendent of Railway Police M Kantha Rao told reporters.
"When Santilal resisted their attempt, they inflicted knife injuries on his leg and hands. The robbers, who noticed that some passengers are trying to catch them after the incident, immediately jumped out of the running train in order to escape from the scene," Rao said.
However, two of the accused KV Dayaram and PK Mohanty, who belong to Maharashtra, died on the spot and their partner, who sustained serious injuries, died on the way to the hospital, the Railway Superintendent of Police said adding that efforts were on to establish the identity of the third person.
Jain was later shifted to a private hospital in Visakhaptnam and his condition is out of danger, he added.
Police have recovered three knives, cellphones and PAN cards from the site. Their bodies were sent for post-mortem and further investigations are on, Kantha Rao said
