Rameswaram:
Around 4,000 fishermen, including their family, blocked the Rameswaram-Chennai express near Rameswaram on Saturday to demand the Indian government's intervention to bring back 19 fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan navy two weeks ago.
A court in Sri Lanka has extended the judicial custody of the fishermen till April 11. The protesting fishermen claim they were arrested in Indian waters, but Sri Lankan officials say they trespassed into their waters.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has urged the Centre to put pressure on Sri Lanka to release the fishermen without filing cases.
Fishermen in Ramanathapuram district have not been venturing into sea over the last two weeks as a mark of protest. They are expected to resume fishing on Monday after being assured by the district collector that steps would be taken to secure the release of 19 fishermen.
