Tuticorin : The Tuticorin police has arrested two men for allegedly attempting to rape and murdering a thirteen-year-old school girl whose body was found in a bushy area near Seithunganallur on Friday.

"The men have confessed to killing the girl; they first attempted to rape her but could not and later strangulated her," the Tirunelvelli range DIG Mr Sumit Sharan told NDTV.

"We will charge them for rape and murder," he added.

One of the accused is already facing molestation charges after he allegedly harassed his cousin. "He was on bail and attacked the family for going to police and we were on the look out for him," Tuticorin SP Mr J Rajendran told NDTV.

On Friday, according to police, the accused men were drunk and noticing the class seven girl student walking alone they dragged her into a bushy area.

The police suspected foul play and had sent the body for post mortem. The medical examination has found no prima facie evidence of rape. However samples have been sent for SWAB test for further investigation, police said.

On Friday, the class seven student had not attended classes and had not returned home. Worried, her grandfather had filed a complaint with the police.

Local people staged a road 'roko' demanding justice.

Activists are up in arms. Many say this murder of a young girl could have been prevented if only the police had monitored the man accused of molestation after he was released on bail so that there's no repeat sex offence.
