Salem:
Fearing that his son would send him away after inheriting the property, as he saw in a TV serial, an octogenarian and former panchayat president killed the son with an iron rod while he was asleep, police said.
They said the 80-year-old man was watching the serial last night at Valpadi panchayat, showing a man sending his parents away from a town after inheriting the property.
Scared that the same fate might befall him, he took an iron rod, went to where his son was sleeping and beat him to death, police said.
His wife and daughter were also asleep at the time of the incident.
The old man, who has been arrested, was running a school in the village and had 20 acres of cultivated land, police said.
