Waive Puducherry Govt's loan dues to the Centre: CPI

Puducherry: The Puducherry unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has urged the Centre to waive the loan dues from the Puducherry administration.

A resolution adopted at a meeting of the State Committee on Tuesday wanted all political parties to put pressure on the Centre to waive the loans, as such a measure would bring down the burden felt by the state government to a large extent, and the payment of interest for the outstanding loans would also be saved and utilised for various welfare programmes.

The meeting was addressed by the party's National Secretary D Raja, local unit Secretary R Viswanathan and others.

The party also attributed the current financial crisis in Puducherry to "wrong policies" of the UPA Government through another resolution. It claims that the policy adopted by the Centre reduced allocation of funds for Puducherry under the annual plans.

The CPI also criticised the hike in Value Added Tax (VAT) on hotel products, motor vehicles, electoral goods and other consumer commodities, saying it had hit trade and business.
