2010 Games: India promises enough security

New Delhi: From slow progress at construction sites to security concerns, the Commonwealth Games in Delhi next year have made headlines for all the wrong reasons. But the list of security measures announced on Wednesday might change that.

Nearly 90-thousand security personnel and 2-thousand CCTV cameras will be deployed to protect venues and participants during the games; these will be coordinated by the Delhi Police from a special control room. The Indian Air Force too will be called in for aerial surveillance over the National Capital Region.

Roads will also have special corridors for players and delegates. In fact, standby commando units will be posted on all routes that players will take.

The announcements came at a 2-day conference that began on Wednesday, with organisers are trying hard to convince foreign delegates that both the games and security will be in place when their teams arrive.

Organising Committee Chief Suresh Kalmadi even promised that "members of participating countries will also be taken for site visits on Thursday".  He added, "In Hyderabad, one team pulled out of the badminton championships over security concerns, We want to assure the world that everything is fine."

8-thousand players and over a lakh visitors are expected in Delhi for the Games next year. Despite the question marks on arrangements at several venues, organisers are putting up a brave front for now.
