AAI to hold series of tournaments before CWG

New Delhi: Three prize money tournaments including the national archery championship will be organised at the Yamuna Sports Complex in run up to Commonwealth Games, AAI said after its Annual board meeting here on Saturday.

The Archery Association of India (AAI) chalked out a rigorous training and selection schedule for the October 3-14 quadrennial event and said Federation Cup and a mini tournament for cadets will also be held at the same venue before the Games.

"The selection committee has drawn up a rigorous training schedule of five selection trails for the final three-member team each in the four categories for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games and a four-member team for World Cup 2010," AAI president V K Malhotra said.

"We have planned a few tournaments like Federation cup, National Champions -- seniors and juniors -- which will have Recurve, Compound and Indian style and a mini tournament for the cadets before the Commonwealth Games.

"And just before the Games there will be three more prize money tournaments for the archers," he said.

Malhotra also praised the performances of the Indian archers in the recent past and hoped that the winning run will continue in the future events.

"We have really done well in the recent past. We won 39 golds, 23 silver and 22 bronze during 2009-10. In the recent test event in Delhi, we won 12 medals. Atanu Das and Seema Verma qualified for Youth Olympics in Singapore, so it has been a stunning performance by the archers and we hope they continue the good run," he said.
