The AIFF on Friday gave its go ahead to the Asian Football Confederation's new rule that allows football clubs in the continent to register four foreign players including one of Asian origin into their squad.
With the Indian clubs already permitted to register a player of Indian origin from the earlier two editions of I League, today's decision would mean the three plus one plus one rule will be made applicable from this season.
The decision was arrived a meeting of I-League Clubs and the AIFF.
The All India Football Federation also announced that the third edition of the I-League will kick off from October 1 with a clash between last year's winners Churchill Brothers and Mahindra United in Mumbai.
There will be 182 matches in 26 rounds, with 14 teams competing for the coveted title. This year's edition will also witness teams from Kerala and Shillong making their debuts.
The other decisions taken in the meeting, chaired by outgoing AIFF General Secretary Alberto Colaco, include forming of a security committee before the start of the League for security of players and officials.
All the clubs have been given a two-year time to fulfill the criteria set by AFC.
The clubs were also allowed to register four doctors and two physios apart from the seven regulated officials who travels with the team.
