China claims 1,000th Asian Games gold medal

Swimmer Zhu Qianwei wrote her namein the history books on Saturday by winning China's 1,000th Asian Gamesgold medal, a feat no other nation has achieved.

The landmark was reached 36 years after China first competed in an Asiad at Tehran in 1974.

Theyhave progressively become more dominant over the years, culminating inwinning 165 golds at the last Games in Doha four years ago.

Zhu brought the magic figure up by winning the women's 200 metres freestyle title on the opening day of the Guangzhou Games.

The nearest countries to China in the gold medal stakes are Japan (861) and South Korea (542), as of early Saturday evening.

No other country in the 45-member Olympic Council of Asia has won more than 125.

China's most accomplished gold medallist was shooter Wang Yifu who claimed 14 between 1986 and 2002.

Shooting is also the sport in which China has won the most gold (154), followed ay athletics (140) and gymnastics (102).
