Government on Fridaydecided to pump in another Rs 687.06 crore for the Commonwealth Games to installhigh-end equipment and fittings necessary for the sportingextravaganza.
The Union Cabinet presided by Prime Minister ManmohanSingh cleared the proposal from the Sports Ministry for "overlays" to be givento Organising Committee of Commonwealth Games which will be held inOctober.
Overlays are defined as temporary fittings, fixtures andequipment which will be required only for the duration of the Games. They arerequired to make the competition, training and non-competition venuesoperationally ready for the Games.
"The installation of thesehigh-end items of overlays will set high standards for technological excellenceand capacity enhancement not only in the sphere of sports but also for theorganisation and management of mega international and national events," I and BMinister Ambika Soni said.
The overlays are expected to be in placeand operational about a month prior to the Games, that is by the end of Augustand these will be removed from the venues immediately after the Games, shesaid.
This amount will be in addition to the Rs 2,296.43 croreallocation made for the Games in the Union Budget for next fiscal. Of this, Rs2,069.52 crore has been allocated to Sports Ministry for the while UrbanDevelopment ministry has been given Rs 176.90 crore and Delhi government Rs 50crore.
The Games will be held in the capital from October 3 to 14 in17 sporting disciplines. There will be 23 competition venues, 26 trainingvenues, Games Village, International Broadcasting Centre and Main Press Centreamong other facilities.
Around one lakh people are expected to visitthe capital during the event.
Soni said the competition andnon-competition venues are in an advanced stage of construction by concernedagencies such as Delhi Government, Sports Authority of India and DelhiDevelopment Authority.
The Timing, Scoring Result (TSR) systemincluding the On Venue Result (OVR) system and Games Time Sports equipment arebeing separately procured by the Organising Committee, she said.
Thesecurity and surveillance related equipment at the venues is being installed byElectronic Corporation of India Ltd, she added.
