New York:
Two-time major finalist Elena Dementieva made a successful return to Grand Slam tennis Monday, beating Olga Govortsova of Belarus 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of the US Open.
The 12th-seeded Dementieva missed Wimbledon in June because of a left calf injury, ending a run of 46 consecutive appearances at Grand Slam tournaments.
She was the runner-up at U.S. Open and French Open in 2004, and won a gold medal in singles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Dementieva hit four aces and six double-faults against Govortsova and won all eight of her service games.
