Football World Cup: Bookies pick Spain over Holland

Football World Cup: Bookies pick Spain over Holland
London: The amount spent on betting on the Football World Cup may turn out to be the highest ever in the UK, with bets on the Spain-Holland final alone expected to total around 50 million pounds.

Betting turnover on the World Cup is all set to reach a record 1 billion pounds, despite England's exit from the latter stages of the tournament.

A bookmaker has said they expect bets totalling 50 million pounds to be placed on Sunday's final between Spain and Holland. If you were to bet 1 pound on Spain you'd win 1.1 pounds, not too much profit, but 1 pound placed on Holland would fetch you 3.

"We are saying Spain is the red hot favourites at 4-7 with Holland 6-4. In terms of profits, it's been fantastic, but in terms of a turnover, slightly less than expected because of the freak results. Having said that it's still 1 billion pounds. The final will be massive," said Rupert Adams of William Hill.

Most money has been bet on Spanish striker David Villa to be the tournament's leading goal scorer.

"Supporting Holland as they are the underdogs. I have been betting, but not betting on the final, as I have already lost some money," said one of the soccer enthusiasts.

"Good nation, good team, they got Germany out, who got us out, but that's the reason I am supporting them," said another bookmaker.

You can bet on just about any aspect of the game, how many yellow cards, red cards, how many goals, who would score them, how much time would the first one be scored in, and even whether the English referee will be taken off the field injured!
