Haryana awards cash prizes to Asian Games medallists

Haryana government on Wednesday awarded cash prizes to all the 64 sportspersons from the state who participated in the recently-concluded Asian Games in Guangzhou.

Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda felicitated the players of the state for bringing glory in the Asian Games by giving them cash awards.

Haryana's sportspersons had won 31 medals, including 13 gold, nine silver and nine bronze.

The winners of gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded cash prizes of Rs 25 lakh, Rs 15 lakh and Rs 10 lakh respectively while their coaches were also handed cash awards of Rs 3 lakh, Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh.

All the players of the state, who participated in the Asian Games but could not win medals, will also be awarded cash prize of Rs 2 lakh each.

The villages of the gold, silver and bronze medal winning players will also be rewarded with prize money of Rs 51 lakh, Rs 31 lakh and Rs 21 lakh respectively for their development.

The gold medal winners honoured included Vikas Yadav, Vijender Singh (both boxing), Kaptan Singh, Samarjeet Singh (kabaddi) and Sanam Singh (lawn tennis), silver medallists honoured included Balraj Yadav (sailing), Gagan Narang (shooting) and Dinesh Kumar (boxing) and bronze winners honoured included Krishna Punia (athletics), Sandeep Singh (hockey), Mausam Khatri and Ravinder (wrestling).

Speaking on the occasion, Hooda announced to adopt a three pronged strategy for producing world class sportspersons.

The strategy included strengthening of the sports infrastructure, hunt for hidden talent and ensuring secure future of the sportspersons, he said adding that 11 more sports academies would be set up in the state to provide better facilities to sportspersons.

Hooda also honoured medal winners of Youth Olympic Games held recently at Singapore and of Paralympic Games held in China. Those honoured included Pooja Dhanda (Hissar), Vikas Krishna (Bhiwani) and Deepa Malik (Sonipat).
