Indian ruggers no match for Asian rivals

Guangzhou: Indian men and women ruggers went down without a fight in their respective pool matches to lie at the bottom of the points table in the Rugby competition of the Asian Games on Monday.

The men's team, skippered by Naseer Hussain, lost to China and Sri Lanka while the women's ruggers, captained by Surabhi Date, were outclassed by Japan and Singapore at the University Town Main Stadium.

Indian men, ranked 75th in the world, were no match for the 67th ranked China, as they lost 0-61 in their second Pool B match after receiving a 5-43 thrashing at the hands of South Korea in their group opener yesterday.

In their next outing, the team managed to score some points against the better-placed world number 43 Sri Lankans, but that did not prove sufficient as they lost 12-42.

Up against the Japanese girls, the Indian women's team failed to provide any resistance to their formidable opponents and were blanked 0-36 in the Pool B match.

The Indian eves fared better comparatively in their game against Singapore but could not cause an upset going down 5-22.

Tomorrow, the men's team will face Pool A leader Japan in the knockout round after finishing their league engagements from Pool B without a victory. The eves, having lost all their group matches from Pool B, will meet Pool A topper China.
