Jeev Milkha Singh may skip Royal Trophy

Jeev Milkha Singh may skip Royal Trophy
Nursing a back injury but part of the Asian team for next month's Royal Trophy, ace Indian golfer Jeev Milkha Singh on Friday said he would decide on his participation only at the end of this month.

Asian team captain Naomichi 'Joe' Ozaki yesterday named Jeev in his team for the January 7 to 9 face off against Europe in Hua Hin, Thailand.

Asia would be bidding to reclaim the Royal Trophy from Europe at Black Mountain Golf Club.

The Indian ace, who has made three appearances at the prestigious event, said his back injury is healing but the ultimate decision on his participation would be based on the doctor's assessment.

"I have committed to the Royal Trophy but the final word will be on December 21 and 22 when I have the MRI done," Jeev said.

"I am looking at it positively but if the doctor says that I have to rest then I would give it a miss," the seasoned pro told reporters at the launch of Callaway Golf's RAZR line of irons.

Ranked 162nd in the world right now, the 38-year-old said whether he makes it or not, Asia has a very good chance of winning back the Royal Trophy.

"Asia has a very good team and they have a great chance to win the Royal Trophy. I am sure it is going to be very competitive like always," he said.

Talking about his injury which forced him to skip the Indian Open last week, Jeev said the excruciating pain has subsided to an extent.

"I am recovering well. The pain has gone down dramatically. I need to start some strengthening exercises so that my body is able to take the pressure when I am hitting drives and striking the ball out of the rough while playing," he said.
