Kyrgyzstan sign off with a 4-1 win over Lanka

New Delhi: Kyrgyzstan outplayed Sri Lanka 4-1 to sign off their Nehru Cup international football tournament campaign in convincing fashion at the Ambedkar Stadium on Friday.

The Central Asian side scored through Zemlianuhon Anton (34th minute), Amirov Ildar (45th), Murzaev Mirlan (65th) and Usanov Rustem (70th) while Sri Lanka reduced the margin through captain Chathura Maduranga in the 53rd minute.

With this win from the inconsequential round-robin fixture, Kyrgyzstan finished the five-nation tournament with four points from four matches -- the same as Lebanon -- while Sri Lanka ended at the last spot with three points -- from their win against Lebanon.

With nothing at stake apart from pride, both the sides played an open and attacking game and had several attempts at each other's goal.

In the 24th minute, Sri Lanka striker EB Channa had a free header off a corner but the ball went over the bar. Three minutes later it was the turn of Kyrgyzstan to attack but Amirov Ildar shot straight to the Lankan goalkeeper Asanka Viraj.

Kyrgyzstan took the lead in the 34th minute when Anton flicked a nice cross from the right by captain Harchenko Vadim into the net.

Next minute, Anton had another fine shot from just outside the box but Viraj dived to his left to make a fine save.

At the stroke of halftime, Ildar beat the off-side trap and sent the ball past an advancing Viraj to make it 2-0 for Kyrgyzstan.

The Lankans, however, reduced the margin eight minutes into the second half with captain Maduranga chipping over Kyrgyz goalkeeper Agapov Maksim into the net from the right side of the box.

The goal proved to be just a momentary setback for Kyrgyzstan as they raided the Lankan citadel several times and scored two more goals in the space of five minutes.

In the 55th minute, Mirzaliev found Anton free inside the Lankan box , only to hit straight to the Lankan keeper.

Kyrgyzstan made it a two-goal advantage in the 65th minute with Mirlan gently tapping in into the empty net after the Viraj was beaten by a Harchenko Vadim cross from the right.

Five minutes later, Rustem made it 4-1 with a free header to take the game away from Sri Lanka's reach.
