Kochi:
Sunil Gavaskar has told NDTV that he does not have any stake in the Kochi cricket team, and that he has not accepted an offer to head the franchise's cricket operations.
Satyajit Gaikwad, a co-owner of the Kochi franchise, told NDTV this morning that he has asked Gavaskar to look after its cricketing operations. However, Gaikwad made it clear that the offer to Gavaskar was made only after he exited the IPL governing council last month. (Read: 'Didn't have guts to ask Gavaskar earlier')
Hours later, Gavaskar said, "The association with Kochi is up in the air, since I am yet to decide. I have been approached by many franchises, Kochi is just one of them."
Had Gavaskar helped the Kochi group put together its bid, or advised them in other ways in March, he could be accused of a serious conflict of interest since at the time, he was a part of the council that decided on guidelines and other key factors for groups making bids for new IPL teams.
Gavaskar says he will make up his mind about joining Kochi once the franchise's fate is decided on Wednesday. The IPL governing council meets on Wednesday in Nagpur to decide the fate of the Kochi franchise. The five members of the consortium, led by Rendezvous Sports owned by the Gaikwads, have been divided over their share of the team. The uber-body for cricket in India, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had warned them to resolve their differences or have their franchise terminated.
Gavaskar said "my name will not help them to get a favourable decision."
A report in the newspaper Times of India on Tuesday morning said that Gavaskar had helped Kochi to pull off a coup in March, where it beat bids from bigger and richer consortiums from Ahmedabad and Pune, to bag an IPL team.
