Oz shares concerns about security for Bangalore test match

Bangalore: The CEO of Cricket Australia, James Sutherland, has written a letter to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressing his reservations about Bangalore as a venue for the a test match during the India-Australia series.

The Bangalore Test is scheduled from October 9-13. The Australians say they are satisfied with all the other venues for the Tests and ODIs including Mohali, Vizag, Kochi and Goa.

Here is the letter written by Sutherland to N Srinivasan, the Secretary of the BCCI.

"I have previously mentioned to you that our group (comprising the team manager, cricket operations manager, security manager and a representative of our players' association) did have some lingering concerns about the security arrangements in Bangalore with the small explosions outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium during IPL 3, there is obviously some greater sensitivity and awareness about security risks in Bangalore.

Whilst in Bangalore, the pre-tour group met with the senior police officer in charge of the security for the 2nd Test, deputy commissioner G Ramesh. Appreciating that the DC was very busy when he met with our group, they didn't leave the meeting with an understanding of the security plan that will be in place for the Bangalore Test match despite Mr Ramesh's vague indications that 'all will be in place'.

We fully understand that challenges in dealing with relevant authorities in each state who have their own independent jurisdiction over security. However, we have concerns regarding the required level of security and the detailed plans for Bangalore and I respectfully request that the BCCI follow up this matter through the state's chief minister and advise us of any response.  

In particular, our security manager has re-emphasized the importance of security officers at the stadium being vigilant in their screening of patrons before they enter the ground.

Srini, with the exception of Bangalore, CA is very comfortable with the security planning and arrangements to be put in place for the upcoming tour. We appreciate the support and understanding the BCCI has afforded us on this matter.

In regard to Bangalore, I would appreciate your advice as to how we can all gain a greater sense of comfort as to the security plans and arrangements for the second Test at M Chinnaswamy Stadium."

Speaking to NDTV, G Ramesh, the Deputy Commissioner of the Bangalore police, clarified, "Nobody has approached us. One month back, the manager of the Australia team and the people from KSCA... they met me here in my office and they discussed the security arrangements for the test match between India and Australia from 9th to 13th October. As far as this thing is concerned. I am not aware. They have not consulted me in recent days."

Ramesh added, "The 9th is far off. KPL match is going on - we are busy with KPL match. In the midst of all these things so far, we have not made any arrangements for conducting that Australia match."
