Washington: Somdev Devvarman lost to Kevin Kim for the first time in three meetings, a defeat which cost him a place in the main draw of ATP Legg Mason Tennis Classic.
Fifth seed Somdev lost to the 10th seeded American 6-3, 4-6, 1-6 in the second and final round of the qualifying event.
Before this match, Somdev had defeated Kim at the Newport event this year and at Chennai Open last year.
Now Rohan Bopanna will present the Indian challenge in the doubles event of the $1,165,500 hard court tournament.
He has teamed up with Pakistan's partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi.
They will open their campaign against Czech-Austrian combination of Martin Damm and Oliver Marach.
