New York:

India's Somdev Devvarman has qualified for the singles draw of the US Open after beating Poland's Jerzy Janowicz in round three of the qualifiers.

Somdev has become the first Indian since 2002 to enter the main draw of a slam. Prakash Amritraj was the last Indian male in a grand slam singles.

Somdev was just a step away from qualifying for his first singles Grand Slam appearance, following his victory over Netherlands' Igor Sijsling in the second round of the US Open qualifiers.

Somdev beat the world number 305, Igor, in three sets - 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 - in a little over two hours.

Earlier this year, Somdev had come close to qualifying for the singles draw in the Australian Open but stumbled at the final hurdle.
