Terry signs 5-year contract with Chelsea

London: John Terry has signed a five-year contract to keep him at Chelsea until the end of the 2014 season in a move which could end Manchester City's attempt to lure him away from Stamford Bridge.

The 28-year-old England international centerback has been with the Blues throughout his career after first signing in 1997 and had two years left on his contract. He was strongly linked with a move to Man City, owned by a wealthy business consortium from Abu Dhabi, two months ago.

Since than, City signed centerbacks Kolo Toure from Arsenal and Joleon Lescott from Everton.

Terry's performances at the heart of the Chelsea defense helped the team win back-to-back Premier League titles in 2005 and '06. His penalty miss in the shootout in the 2008 Champions League final against Manchester United, however, cost the team the title in Moscow after the two sides drew 1-1.

"Chelsea are delighted to confirm that John Terry has signed a new five-year contract that keeps him at the club until the end of the 2013-14 season," the club said in a statement.

"This reaffirms both John's and Chelsea's long-stated desire for him to be at Stamford Bridge for the rest of his playing career."
