Srinagar:
The 434-km long Srinagar-Leh National Highway has been closed for vehicular traffic, officials said today.
Traffic on the strategic highway, the only road linking the frontier region of Ladakh with the rest of the state, was suspended yesterday as the authorities found the road unfit for traffic at many places, the officials said.
They said the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir has ordered suspension of vehicular traffic of all types on Zojila-Drass road as recommended by the Chief Engineer, Project Beacon.
The Divisional Commissioner, along with Beacon officials, inspected the highway and found it slippery at many places including Zojilla and ordered its closure, they said.
The highway remains closed for nearly six months each year.
