Chennai: A symphony by 100 young students kept the audience spellbound in Chennai this evening as they paid tributes to late MS Subulakshmi, the queen of Carnatic music, on her birth centenary.
The symphony of the legend's vintage songs marked the inauguration of the Bharat Sangeet Utsav, a nine-day music festival, in the city.
"We can feel her bhawa when we listen to her songs," said Diksha Krishnan, a young student.
"Her songs are full of bhakti," added another student.
A special singer, who paid tribute, was Aishwarya, the legend's great granddaughter. She sang one of her favorite songs "Kurai Ondrum Illai."
The legendary singer was fondly known as MS Amma. She was born on September 16, 1916. She started singing at a very early age. By the time she was in her thirties, she had become a household name.
"MS Subbulakshmi is still the queen of music. People start their day with her music, they listen to it even before they sip their morning coffee," said KN Shasikiran, Curator, Bharat Sangeet Utsav, English.
