Tuticorin:
A 15-year old girl was dumped in a water tank, with her legs and arms bound with tape, allegedly by a money lender for telling police that she was a witness to him assaulting her mother and threatening to kill her.
The girl was found in the tank at their house in Kazhugumalai area in the district in an unconscious state by her mother, a widow, hours after the incident. The girl has been admitted to a hospital, police said.
As the girl's relatives picketed the local police station demanding action against the moneylender, Parthasarthy, police assured that the matter would be looked into.
According to police, Parthasarathy had assaulted and threatened the girl's mother for not settling a loan taken by her husband, who has died.
Following this, she complained to the police seeking protection. The girl told the police that she was a witness to the moneylender assaulting her mother and threatening her.
Angered by the girl's action, Parthasarathy along with his hirelings entered her house when she was alone, stuck a tape over her mouth, bound her hands and legs and pushed her into the water tank.
Police said they were searching for the absconding accused.
