Salem, Tamil Nadu: More than a hundred pair of silver anklets, weighing a total of six kilograms and reportedly worth three lakhs, have been confiscated in Tamil Nadu, because they were sealed in packets with photos of DMK leaders M Karunanidhi and MK Stalin.

Tamil Nadu votes on May 16 for its next government and the model code of conduct has been declared, which bans politicians from offering gifts or freebies to voters. The Chief Electoral Officer Rajesh Lakhoni has said that "these could be given as bribes".

The anklets were seen as likely bribes and were found in the home of a DMK worker who is also a jeweller in the Salem district of the state, according to news agency IANS.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa  and her AIADMK are hoping to remain in power;  Mr Karunanidhi, 91, leads the opposition DMK and has served as Chief Minister in the past and MK Stalin is his son and political heir.

Tamil Nadu has for decades given alternate terms to  the DMK and the AIADMK.
