Chennai: Tamil Nadu government said that over 1700 metric tonnes of PDS rice meant to be smuggledhad been recovered in the past eight months while around 3300 persons had been held for the crime.
Food Minister R Kamaraj held a review meeting with officials and instructed them to keep a tight vigil witha view to prevent smuggling of PDS rice, distributed free of cost to 1.84 ration-card holders across the state.
According to a state government press release, the government has committed a sum of Rs 4,700 crore towards foodsubsidy every year.
Between the period June 1, 2011 and February 27, 2012,1785 tonnes of PDS rice meant to be smuggled was recovered byCivil Supplies CID, which also seized nearly 70,000 litres of kerosene oil, the release said.
A total of 3315 smugglers had been arrested and 171 of them detained under relevant anti-blackmarketing provisions, it said.
As part of efforts to prevent smuggling of PDS rice, various steps, including surveillance of fair price shops,increasing night-time patrol and strengthening of security on inter-state borders among others have to be taken, it added.
