Two people died and two were injured after a Ganesh Chaturthi chariot came in contact with a live electric wire in Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar.
Two others who suffered injuries are out of danger and are being treated.
According to district Collector J Meghanatha Reddy, the incident took place last evening in the Sokkanathur Puttur area near Rajapalayam in Virudhunagar district.
"Unfortunately, two persons died and three others sustained injuries due to electrocution when the chariot came into contact with a live overhead cable," Mr Reddy said, as quoted by news agency PTI.
The two victims were identified as S Munishwaran (24) and K Marimuthu (23).
"The accident took place after the immersion of the idol when the team was returning. The roof of the chariot came in touch with a live wire overhead," the police told NDTV.
According to the cops, the procession had police permission but it's not clear why the power supply was not switched off.
Further investigation is underway.
This is the second such tragedy involving the electrocution of temple chariots in the last five months.
In April, 11 people died of electrocution when a temple chariot came in contact with a power cable in Thanjavur district.
