Chennai: Two school students were electrocuted in a moving bus when one of them playfully pulled a wet leaf stalk from the roadside coconut tree, possibly hanging over a live wire, in Tamil Nadu's Theni district, police said.
The incident occurred on Sunday when S Mukesh, a class X student pulled the leaf stalk from a roadside coconut tree after which the entire bus suffered an electric shock. Mukesh and Karthigai Selvan, a class XII student, seated next to him died on the spot.
Fifteen others, including 12 students and the bus conductor suffered injuries. All are being treated at a government hospital.
Police suspect the tree must have been in contact with the live wire. The investigation is being done.
"We are probing. As of now we've filed a case of accidental death. We don't know if there was any negligence," a police officer said.
A Madurai based non-profit organistaion had organised a picnic for the students. They were returning from the Sothuparai Dam.
