A 23-year-old old woman was hacked to death at her house in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore on Wednesday night allegedly by a man she had turned down.
S Dhanya, who was already engaged to be married, was alone at home when Zahir allegedly entered through the rear door of the house and attacked her with a sickle after she refused her advances. Her parents had gone out for shopping and had locked the front door, police said.
The 27-year-old accused allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison after killing Dhanya. He has been admitted to an ICU ward of a hospital in Palakkad.
Police said that the accused, a mill worker, was a family friend and had known Dhanya for over a year. However, Dhanya's parents rejected his proposal of marrying their daughter.
"We've registered a case of murder. We have not arrested him yet as he's in the ICU (intensive care unit)".
Last month, a 24-year-old teacher, N Francina was clubbed to death inside a church in Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin. The man who attacked her was found hanging at his home hours later.
In a similar incident this year, 24-year-old Swathi, employed with software giant Infosys, was hacked to death around 6.30 am on June 24 while waiting to board a train at Nungambakkam Railway Station to her workplace on the city outskirts.
