At least four workers are trapped in a quarry or an open-pit mine since last night in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, while two people have been rescued so far, police said today.
"The workers got trapped about 300-feet underneath the quarry mines in the Muneer Pallam area after boulders rolled from the top and a giant stone fell into the quarry, making their truck immobile," an official said.
"Initially six workers had got stuck. Fire Service officials have rescued two people and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also been called in, " Asra Garg, Inspector General of Police, Southern Range told NDTV.
A helicopter too was brought in for the rescue operation this morning. "Our 24x7 control room in Arakkonam is closely monitoring the situation round the clock and all efforts are being made in close collaboration with Tamil Nadu State Administration," the NDRF said.
Talking about the challenges that the rescue team is facing, Mr Garg said, "The structure of the quarry is such that it could take some more time to rescue all those trapped. At the moment we are not sure if there are more people trapped in the quarry other than the four workers".
