500 Cusecs Surplus Water to Be Released From Chembarambakkam Lake Near Chennai

Last week too, the Chembarambakkam Lake was let open following very heavy rain fall brought by a low pressure trough.

Chennai: Due to the heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, authorities in Kancheepuram near Chennai will discharge 5000 cusecs of surplus water from the Chembarambakkam reservoir which is already overflowing.

Officials have cautioned people living in low lying areas along River Adyar to move as the river would take the water to the Bay of Bengal. This could inundate pockets of Chennai including Varadarajapuram, Pammal, Mudichur, Manapakkam and Kotturpuram.

Last week too, the lake was let open following very heavy rain fall brought by a low pressure trough. This contributed to heavy flooding in Chennai last Monday when the city was pounded by 31 centimetres of rain in 24 hours. As rains stopped, the discharge was brought down to help waters to recede.

Twelve thousand people were evacuated as waters surrounded their homes and entered many.

"District Collector R Gajalakshmi said, "We have to discharge at least the inflow. We do not expect any major impact."

The social media was abuzz with worry. "Feel disturbing, my heart goes down," posted a person called Badrinath.

A worried Krishna Swamy asked, "Will it affect West Tambaram area because we are just limping back to normalcy."
