Aggrieved parents of a seven-year-old girl on Friday lodged a complaint with the commissioner of police against the management of a private school in Pervallur, alleging that the institution failed to take responsibility for an eye injury suffered by their daughter while she was at school.
The girl sustained a corneal tear when her classmate's sharp pencil accidentally pierced her right eye.
In his complaint, M Balendran of Perambur alleged that his daughter B Prarthana, studying in class II, sustained serious injury while at school on November 5. The incident happened, as seven students were made to sit on a bench that could accommodate just four. The school authorities failed to provide her first aid and informed him only two hours after the incident.
Balendran said he rushed his daughter to a private clinic, where doctors referred her to Dr Agarwal's eye hospital on Cathedral Road. A right eye corneal tear repair with iris excision was performed at the hospital on November 10. "The school authorities, who said they would look into the matter, gave Rs 7,000 and turned us away saying they could not be held responsible for the incident," said Balendran, who works in a printing press.
"Despite spending Rs 45,000 towards medical expenses, there is not much improvement in our daughter's condition," he added. The girl's parents approached the CoP after the Thiru-vi-ka Nagar police failed to initiate any action in the issue.
