Chennai: Tension prevailed in Kancheepuram on Monday after one of the famous temples, the Varadaraja Perumal Temple, in the town received a bomb threat that later turned out to be hoax.
Police said the control room at the Greater Chennai City police commissioner's office received a phone call from an anonymous caller that a bomb had been placed in the Varadaraja Perumal Temple, one of the 108 divya desams, and that it would explode any moment. Immediately, the information was passed on to the office of the Superintendent of Police, Kancheepuram.
A thorough search inside the temple, including the sanctum sanctorum, with sniffer dog Caesar did not reveal anything and the phone call proved to be a hoax. Police said devotees who arrived at the temple after the incident were frisked and their baggage checked.
"The control room in Chennai city commissioner's office received the call and we were informed that it was a call from a phone booth. The cyber crime is trying to trace the call," said a police official
