A two-and-a half-year old boy fell into an abandoned borewell at a village near Vellore this morning and efforts are on to rescue him.
"The child fell into the abandoned borewell when he was playing this morning," Assistant District Fire Officer Murugesan told PTI.
The borewell was abandoned after water had dried and the opening left open, the official said.
The mishap happened at Koorampadi village in Arcot taluk in Vellore. The local authorities alerted the Fire and Rescue Services and NDRF officials after the mishap.
"The borewell is approximately 250 feet deep and the child is struck at about 20 feet and we are hopeful of rescuing the child," he added.
A team of 20 rescuers have been rushed to the spot to bring out the child safely, an NDRF official said.
