Chennai: On the eve of his 65th birthday, DMDK chief Vijayakanth today exhorted party workers to take a vow to "work for people's welfare" and "turn challenges into achievements".

"Let us take a vow that we will work for people's welfare and turn the challenges that we confront into achievements," he told them in a statement.

Maintaining a low-profile after his party drew a blank in the May 16 Assembly polls, Vijayakanth said his party was facing troubles and court cases due to the "political vendetta" of the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu.

Under such circumstances, the party workers should vow to turn the tide in their favour by working for the people, said the actor-turned-politician.

In the run-up to the May 16 polls and after the debacle, many DMDK functionaries deserted the party to join either the DMK or the AIADMK.

Ma Foi Pandiarajan and several other DMDK functionaries joined the AIADMK. Former DMDK legislators VC Chandrakumar, Mr Parthiban and Mr Sekar floated 'Makkal DMDK' ahead of the polls, joined hands with the DMK and later, merged the outfit with the Karunanidhi-led party.

The DMDK chief said his party had the lofty ideals of eradicating corruption and poverty and added that the party workers should take a pledge on his birthday to work for the people.

He also appealed to the people to "continue to give their support" to his party.
