Tirunelveli:
Launching a blistering attack against DMK and its President M Karunanidhi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday charged the party with having done little for the state's welfare during its rule and said every vote for DMK-Congress alliance was a vote against people's prosperity.
Addressing an election rally in Tirunelveli, Ms Jayalalithaa charged DMK with non-performance in many areas, including the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, inter-state river disputes and power generation and alleged that the party was involved in corruption in 2G, Aircel-Maxis deal and the telephone exchange case.
She charged DMK with inaction over the plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka during the ethnic conflict. "AIADMK sought probe against those involved."
"DMK colluded with Congress in ceding the Katchatheevu islet to Sri Lanka whereas we are struggling hard to retrieve it," she claimed.
She charged Karunanidhi-led governments in the past with failing to protect the interests of Tamil Nadu in key water disputes including Cauvery with neighbouring Karnataka and claimed that it was her government which ensured that the final award of 2007 was published in Central gazette, after approaching the Supreme Court.
"DMK pushed Tamil Nadu into darkness, we have brightened it," she said in an apparent reference to the power sector and added that while her archrival was supportive of FDI in retail, her government had resisted it.
"With the Coal-bed methane project, DMK tried to convert the Cauvery delta region into a desert," but AIADMK ensured that it did not see the light of the day, she said.
She levelled a series of charges against DMK, including industries being closed down during the previous regime and economy taking a hit, and said the AIADMK government brought new investments and put the state back on track.
The AIADMK supremo alleged that Mr Karunanidhi never had public welfare in mind and whatever schemes his government enacted were done with ulterior motives to benefit him and his family.
"Overall the DMK and Congress had aligned (earlier) to push you into tears. But AIADMK uplifted the poor and wiped off their tears. So vote for AIADMK in the coming elections and that win will be your win. Vote for AIADMK to defeat people's enemies," she said.
