DRI official's bail plea dismissed

Chennai: A CBI court dismissed the bail plea of C Rajan, Additional Director General in Directorate of Revenue Intellegence, who was arrested on charges of accepting bribe to defreeze a bank account, agreeing with the contentionthat he was an influential person.

Principal Special Judge for CBI cases L Yousuf Ali also dismissed the bail plea of Murugesan,the officers car driver.

Opposing the bail petitions, CBI submitted that during custodial interrogation of petitioners, it was revealed thatthey had demanded and received bribes in other cases also.

The complaint against the officer had been filed by one F.Ubaidullah of Pudupet.

The prosecution had contended that Rajan was an influential person and his subordinates, who were witnesses,were not likely to come forward and give statements against the officer if he ws enlarged on bail.

The possibility of threatening and influencing the complainant also could not be brushed aside as unsustainable,the court said and rejected the bail applications.

Rajan was arrested on March six for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs two lakh and an iPad, from Superking Myatzin, aBurmese national of Indian origin, to defreeze the latters account and not book him under the Conservation of ForeignExchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act.

The complaint said Rajan had demanded Rs 10 lakh but finally settled for Rs two lakh.The official had instructedUbaidullah to hand over the money to Murugesan,it alleged.
