Chennai: A major fire gutted a multi-storied textile showroom located in Chennai's busy T Nagar locality this morning.
It took 21 fire engines and 75 firefighters to douse the fire. The operation lasted over 10 hours. There were no casualties.
According to reports, around 12 employees who were staying at the shop were rescued using three skylift trucks.
The fire at the Chennai Silks showroom was noticed around 5 am as thick smoke was billowing out from the seven-floor building, the police said.
"By using skylift we have rescued 12 people. Nobody was injured... smoke is emanating from the basement and it is being extinguished," a fire official told reporters adding that an electric short-circuit might have caused the fire.
The police diverted the traffic around the area and it had been declared out of bounds for the public.
