Chennai: In flood-ravaged Tamil Nadu, the upcoming harvest festival of Pongal could be a bit cheerful for many people.
The state government has announced it will give a gift of Rs 100 along with 1 kg rice, sugar and a two-feet-long sugarcane to all family card holders and Sri Lankan Tamil refugees.
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said it would cost the state government Rs 318 crore.
The recent floods had destroyed life, property and crops in Chennai and several parts of the state. At least 421 people had died.
The government had also announced a relief of Rs 10,000 to those who had lost huts and Rs 5,000 for those who suffered damage to houses.
Tamil Nadu will go to polls in May.
