Government sanctions funds for promotion of sports
Chennai: In a fillip to sports persons in the state, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today announced a slew of measures with a total investment of over Rs 40 crores, including construction of new complexes for hockey and athletics.

Jayalalithaa approved Rs six crore each to set up a hockey ground of "international standards" at Madurai and an eight-track synthetic athletics facility at Tiruchirappalli, an official release here said.

At Madurai, the hockey ground will also be equipped with synthetic turf, floodlights and other modern facilities and the effort at Tiruchirappalli was aimed at promoting athletics, the release said.

Further, basketball courts with modern facilities will come up at Tirunelveli, Tiruvannamalai and Tiruchirappalli at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore while Jayalalithaa approved Rs 6000 each for over 3200 sportspersons with potential to make them win laurels in international competitions, the release said.

Among others, she allocated Rs 30 crore for construction of indoor stadia with audience amenities and other facilities in20 districts of the state. The work will initially be implemented in five districts with an investment of Rs 7.5 crore.
