Puducherry: Puducherry government will install a statue of former Chief Minister MOH Farook as a mark of respect for his contributions to its development in various sectors during his tenure.

Chief Minister N Rangasamy made the announcement on Thursday after tabling a resolution condoling the death of Mr Farook, who was also Governor of Jharkhand and Kerala, besides being Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia.

Farook, who was also a former Member of Lok Sabha, died in a hospital in Chennai after an illness on January 26 this year. Members cutting across party lines recalled the rich contributions Mr Farook had made as Chief Minister in 1967, 1969 and 1985.

They also referred to the multi-faceted qualities of Mr Farook who also served as Speaker in 1964 and 1980.

Paying rich tributes to the late Minister, Mr Rangasamy said that he accepted the suggestion of Opposition leader V Vaithilingam that the government erect a statue in his memory

"We will install the statue of the leader soon. We will also name the arch at the entry point to Karaikal after Farook as Karaikal was his native place. Government will also institute an educational scholarship in Farook's name," he said.

Mr Rangasamy also tabled a resolution condoling the death of former PMK legislator C Ramsingh who died on February 23.

The members also paid homage to former Lt Governor Lieutenant General Ranjit Singh Dayal, who died on January 29. Dayal was tenth Lt Governor between June 1988 and February 1990.

Earlier Congress member Theni C Jayakumar entered the house blowing a conch in protest against 'failure' of government to extend cyclone relief to Mangalam constituency he represents.

AIADMK members staged a walkout to protest non-availability of replies to questions on steps the government had taken to reinstate around 4000 retrenched government employees.

Later DMK legislators A M H Nazeem and Nanda T Saravanan walked out in protest against denial of permission to a plea for adjournment motion to discuss steps taken to mitigate the impact caused by cyclone Thane in Puducherry and other issues.

All members however returned to the House later to participate in the proceedings.
