Chennai:
The Meteorological department has given a heavy rainfall warning to Chennai and northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu for three days till Tuesday. The MET department said that the well-marked low pressure over southwest Bay of Bengal persisted. It is likely to move towards Tamil Nadu coast and Puducherry. More rains were expected in the next 24 hours.
Tamil Nadu received the maximum rainfall of 18 cm recorded till 8:30 this morning. The airport region of Chennai alone received 8 cm rain in three hours. Dr SR Ramanan, chief of the MET centre in Chennai, said, "The trough is a good rain maker and there would be very heavy rainfall in Chennai and northern coastal Tamil Nadu".
A rain holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Puducherry.
On Friday, Chennai was flooded after the city received 19 cm of rain. There was a large scale inundation and water logging. In several low lying areas, water had entered homes as well.
At least sixty people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents across the state. Many of them are from the Cuddalore district where a deep depression from the Bay of Bengal had made a landfall last Tuesday.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has deployed Ministers and senior bureaucrats to coordinate relief and rescue across the state.
PMK Chief Dr Ramadoss has strongly criticised her statement and said, "Losses are unavoidable when there's very heavy rain. Swift rescue and relief alone are the indicators of a good government."
"Had the state government desilted water bodies to increase their storage this could have been averted. Her statement belittles lakhs of people," he said.
He added, "You can't expect anything from her. She had once justified killing of innocent Tamil civilians in Sri Lanka saying civilian casualties are normal in a war."
