Indian Woman Whose Arm Was Chopped Off in Saudi Arabia Returns Home

The Indian government had lodged a strong protest with the Saudi government and had asked for steps to charge the guilty.

Chennai: The Indian woman whose arm was allegedly chopped off by her employer in Saudi Arabia arrived in Chennai today.

Wheelchair-bound, the Tamil Nadu government moved Kasthuri to a government hospital in Chennai.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the 58-year-old domestic help who was attacked allegedly last month after she complained about ill-treatment by her employers and non-payment of promised salary.

The money will be deposited with a government lender, and Kashthuri will be able to draw Rs 8,330 every month as interest.

A mother of three daughters and a son, Kasthuri had gone to Saudi Arabia to repay the a Rs 20 lakh debt her family had incurred after the weddings of two of their daughters. Her family had also sold their house too.

The Indian government had lodged a strong protest with the Saudi government and had asked for steps to charge the guilty.

But Saudi authorities however have backed the employers so far who say she was injured trying to escape from her employer's home by sliding down from the high rise building using a sari.

Seeking Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had had asked him to "ensure best treatment and compensation to Kasthuri". "There's an apprehension that there could be an attempt to protect her local employers," she said.

On her arrival, Kasthuri refrained from talking to the media. A member of the family said, "Besides relief the state and central governments should ensure justice to her, pursuing this case. They should also get her compensation for the pain she has suffered."
