'Jayalalithaa Is Fine, Don't Believe Rumours,' Her Party Assures Supporters

The AIADMK said Jayalalithaa is in hospital only for observation and is likely to be discharged on Friday

Chennai: The Chennai hospital where Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has been admitted for the last seven days has released no medical update on her health in the last 60 hours and her party the AIADMK has assured worried supporters that she is well.

The Chief Minister is being treated for fever and dehydration at the Apollo hospital in Tamil Nadu's capital city.

"Don't believe rumours on Chief Minister's health...Amma is well, she is hale and hearty," the AIADMK's C R Saraswathi told NDTV on Wednesday night. She also detailed how Ms Jayalalithaa has held meetings with her officials and ministers in hospital, including dictating the speech to be made in Delhi on her behalf on the Cauvery river dispute talks with Karnataka as directed by the Supreme Court.

The chief minister, a statement from the government earlier said, detailed the position her government will take at a crucial meeting in Delhi today with union ministers and Karnataka chief minister Siddharamiah.

The AIADMK said Ms Jayalalithaa, 68, is in hospital only for observation now and is likely to be discharged on Friday. Sources said a medical update on her condition is expected from doctors today.

In their last update on Sunday, doctors had dismissed rumours that Ms Jayalalithaa was so ill that she would need to be taken abroad for treatment. They had said the chief minister had no fever, was on a normal diet and under observation.

Opposition leader S Ramadoss of the PMK has suggested that the state government release a photograph or video of the chief minister to quell speculation that she is very unwell.
